Amore’ DJ Entertainment is frequently referred to as “The Best Denver Wedding” by countless venues, and wedding professionals – even recently voted again among the top 5 best wedding DJs in Colorado on another recent Channel 7 News poll by numbeous brides. We appreciate that. Recently, at an appointment, a bride asked about the history of the bouquet and garter and how it all started. What impressed her, was that in an instant, we had an array of factual wedding traditions and their history ready to explain.
Best Denver Wedding DJ Talks A Little History
It is believed that the bride and groom can “transfer” their good fortune from their wedding day to others. Well, we’ve done a little research on this one just to see how it all got started…
It Started with the Bouquet Toss
The practice of the tossing the bridal bouquet is believed to
be an outgrowth from 14th century France. It was considered
lucky to get a fragment of the bride’s clothing. Guests would
grab at her wedding dress in order to tear off a piece for luck.
As the legend goes, one bride threw her bouquet in self defense.
And the rest is…well, history.
…and Now the Garter
In medieval times, the groom would remove the garter as a public
symbol demonstrating that the bride was relinquishing herself
to him. The practice of throwing the garter survived with the
belief that not only whoever “won” the bride’s garter was lucky,
but that luck would also be passed on to him too in the same way.
Best Denver Wedding DJ Answers: “What About in Modern Times?”
Some brides feel that the overall custom of the bouquet and garter can be embarrassing or even tacky, because it singles out the unmarried women who are then “dragged” out to the dance floor to participate in this ritual. Believe us, single guys are just as apprehensive to participate in the garter toss. Overall, the current trend is about 70 percent of Colorado newlyweds hold to the tradition of just doing a bouquet toss; about 10 percent only a garter and about 20 percent doing both the bouquet and garter.
